After electing new leaders, the switching of sides to protect their own interests will follow the change of colors, titles and slogans of the same economic ideology fueled by the same greed and elitism. Then comes the rain, the storm, the floods, the erosion of land and soil and the continued massacre of biodiversity and ecosystem at whose foundations lie the basis of our development and yes, survival.
Then perhaps we will realize that the plight of most of us who go hungry and miserable when the land and lakes, rivers and seas produce very little will just continue simply because of too much heat and too little rain and because in so many areas now we have stripped the forest, dug up the soil to give way for plantations and mines that benefit us less than the value we are losing.
This time around this will be made worse with the impacts of extreme weather conditions as a direct result of the lifestyles and development of other societies; past and emerging, who continue to deny their fault, will not pay for the cost of damage and will not change their ways soon enough before island nations such as us will go hungry or drown.
Only then will we realize that the most important change that should happen is not yet happening. I hope we realize and act before our generation would have totally betrayed the next!
